Show Jaycees Award Local Publisher For Record Of Achievement More Than 150 Members And Guests Attend First Annual Award Banquet Sponsored By Jaycees Last Thursday Night Harrison Conover, publisher and managing editor edi-tor of the Springville Herald, was selected by a committee com-mittee appointed by the local Junior Chamber of Commerce to receive the first an-4 nual distinguished service award given to a young man with the most outstanding record of community com-munity service during the past year. The award, in the form of a gold key, was presented at the first annual banquet of its kind, held Thursday evening at Memorial Memor-ial hall under direction of Grant S. Thorn, Jaycee president. In attendance at-tendance at the affair, which was one of the most succesful and entertaining en-tertaining of its kind ever held here, were approximately 150 club members and guests. W. W. Brockbank, a member of the committee "making the selection, selec-tion, presented the award to Mr. Conover, and in connection with the presentation announced that he was president of the Utah State Press association, of which he served as vice-president last year. He was also vice-president of the Kiwanis club last year, and is a director of the Chamber of Com-berce, Com-berce, of which he has served as secretary. Mr. Brockbank also announced I that last year eleven high schools throughout Utah depended on Mr. Conover for the publication of their annuals. He also directed the publicity of the local scrap drive, which won national recog-' recog-' nition, Mr. Brockbank stated. Other members of the committee commit-tee making the selection were C. G. Salisbury and J. Emmett Bird. President Thorn, during the j evening, presented "key man" I awards to three outstanding work ers in the club the past year. Ray Klauck received the award for his work in sports; Lawrence L. Beach, for aviation, and Kimball J. Larsen for publicity. The local paper and the Salt Lake papers and station KOVO were also cited for their cooperation with the Jaycee organization. Jay G. Brockbank, national director di-rector of the Jaycees, awarded a certificate to the president of the Provo club, Clyde R. James, in recognition of one of its honorary members, Chesley Gordon Peterson, Peter-son, who was selected as one of the 10 outstanding young men of the nation. Ames K. Bagley, executive secretary sec-retary of the Salt Lake City Junior Jun-ior Chamber of Commerce, was the principal guest speaker. Other talks were made by Ray L. Richards, Rich-ards, president of the state Junior Chamber of Commerce, and Carl Measom, navyman home on furlough, fur-lough, who was a special guest. Among other special guests introduced in-troduced during the evening were: Kimball J. Larsen, state secretary-treasurer of the Junior Chamber Cham-ber of Commerce; Dr. D. Elden Beck of Provo, national chairman of Christmas activities; Dr. Geo. Chamber of Commerce; and members mem-bers of the judging committee. Dr. C. A. King was toastmaster during the evening and presided in an efficient manner over a nicely arranged program. In addition to the awards and addresses, Mrs. Frank Morgan entertained en-tertained with a reading, as did Mrs. Venice Springmeyer. Mrs. Ernest Boyer and Mrs. Blaine Wheeler entertained with a vocal duet, accompanied by Mrs. Mary Bird, and Mrs. Boyer led in community com-munity singing. At the opening of the program, a rebroadcast was featured in connection with the national Jaycee distinguished service ser-vice award, the talk being made by President Wm. M. Shepherd of Pine Bluff, Ark. The Legion Auxiliary served the banquet, which was an exceptionally excep-tionally fine one, according to reports re-ports from the many in attendance. |
