Show LOCAL S. H. S. GIRL WINS STATE SPEECH CONTEST Leslie Aileen Hales, high school senior, Saturday won the Utah council of defense oratorical contest con-test finals held in the Tribune-Teleg-ram auditorium, Salt Lake City. Miss Hales, who participated in the 30-minute panel discussion on "Topics of the Day that are Affecting Af-fecting the Nation," won by speaking speak-ing six minutes extemporaneously on "How the United States can Help Japan and Germany in the Postwar World." Miss Hales received re-ceived a $50 war bond for a prize. Other participants from Utah high schools, previous winners of regional contests, were Kathryn Peterson, Snow high school; Dean Baker, Richfield high school; Cor-rinne Cor-rinne Ott and Laura Peterson, So. Summit high school,, and Wayne Bosworth, Box Elder high school. Each received a $25 war bond, awarded by Dan Whelan, executive execu-tive officer, war services section, defense council. Miss Hales is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Ray Hales of this city. She won the honor of competing in the state finals by winning the district contest held recently at Snow College. |
