Show HUNTERS ASKED NOT TO KILL USEFUL BIRDS Young hunters with BB guns and air rifles were warned today by the fish and wildlife service of the department of interior not to exercise their hunting instincts on insect-eating birds protected under the terms of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. For killing such birds, sentences can range as high as a $500 fine or six months in jail or both. In its vacation-time reminder, the service pointed out that the birds have high economic value, and advised hunters to look before they shoot. A large percentage of all birds is protected under federal treaties treat-ies and acts. Among the protected protect-ed birds are the night-hawks, swifts, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, woodpeck-ers, tanagers, larks, swallows, titmice, tit-mice, creepers, wrens, thrushes, (including robins and bluebirds), mockingbirds, (including catbirds), cat-birds), warblers, pipits, wax-wings, wax-wings, flycatchers, shrikes, vireos, meadowlarks, (including orioles and blackbirds) , sparrows and finches. The so-called English sparrow, which is not a true sparrow, is not protected under federal law. |
