THOUSANDS THOUS-ANDS BEING EVACUATED TO SAFETY SHELTERS SHEL-TERS . . . (and the story continues) : Five high-f lying foreign bombers spewed fire over the heads of this area at 7 :45 this morning creating a blackened battlefield battle-field on which at least 90,000 have been stimated kill-' kill-' od or injured. The long-feared A-bomb which opened World War III, was accompanied by general purpose and incendiary bombs. One of the five enemy bombers was downed east of the city. Every uninjured person in the area is being pressed into action to .take care of the shock victims, the injured and the dead. Emergency Emer-gency welfare centers are being established on the edge of the city. The above account of an area bombed is of course an imaginary one, but just what would we m this city, in this county and in this state do if just such headlines head-lines loomed across the morning paper? It may then be too late to do the many things we have been intending in-tending to do since people began talking about bomb-coiloa bomb-coiloa Tr. mnv bp too late to get that kit of antiseptic solution for wounds or aromatic spirits of ammonia for those who faint or even a box of table salt and a package of baking soda, for those in shock. If we had them, would we know how to use them? Where will we find some triangular bandages for slings, covers, dressings ? Where are the eye drops for eves irritated by dust, smoke and flames? Where are the splints for broken limbs ? Where are the water purification tablets to render the water useable when it can't be boiled? Do we have good flashlights; a bar or two of soap ; paper drinking cups? Do we have a three-day emergency supply of food? Is it in airtight containers? Have we talked to our family on ways and means of fighting germ and biological warfare and first-aid m case of bombing? bomb-ing? A large percent of the people place almost childlike child-like f aitMn the ability of our armed forces to prevent pre-vent completely an. enemy attack. England placed her faith on the channel in World War II. In a recent study conducted by the Survey Research Re-search Center at the University of Michigan, nearly two thirds of those interviewed believe that, even m a surprise attack, only a few planes could get through. But what could a few planes do armed with A-bombs and other incendiary means of destruction? The survey sur-vey indicated that half of the people in critical target areas, have not learned what to do after an attack. Do you know? The study also revealed that four-fifths four-fifths of the people are unaware of specific things that civil defense is trying to do. Do you know what civil defense is doing in Springville? In this the Year 3 of the H-bomb, some large newspaper publishers are laying plans for printing emergency editions of their paper by having more than one place in which the paper is printed and giving giv-ing special instructions to their staff to follow in case of emergency. This is an effort to supply Mental I first-aid by allaying the fears of panic and re-laying vital information. , If newspapers are taking such precautions, it doesn't seem out-of -place that we as individuals have a few emergency items on hand ; know how our civil defense is operating and be familiar with basic fundamentals fun-damentals of first-aid. |
