Selects Site for New Building in Springville An announcement was made today by John W. i Snell, District Manager, Mt. States Telephone and Telegraph Co., of the purchase of property- at the northwest corner of 1st East and 2nd South streets, just east of Memorial Me-morial Hall, to accomodate a new building for the Company's new dial system here. Snell also announced that building build-ing specifications have been issued to general contractors for the purpose pur-pose of receiving bids and actual ' construction will begin in the very ,: near future. The building will front on 2nd - South street and will be construct- " ed of steel reinforced concrete with Norman brick facing on three sides. It will be a one story structure, struc-ture, 62 feet square, with a full basement. In the interest of reducing re-ducing future maintenance costs, the interior walls of the dial equipment equip-ment rooms on the first floor will be lined with salt-glazed tile. It is planned that the building will be completed by October, when the installation of the dial system will begin. The new building will house a completely new automatic dial telephone tele-phone system for Springville. This project is part of a three million dollar service improvement and expansion ex-pansion program which also includes in-cludes new dial systems for Provo and Orem. It is" estimated the entire en-tire program will require approximately approx-imately 18 months to complete. All three dial offices will be placed in operation at the same time, Mr. Snell said. In addition to the new building and dial central office equipment, considerable outside line expansion will be required so that more facilities facil-ities will be available to furnish telephone service to customers in this exchange, according to the district dis-trict manager. 1 Upon completion of the three projects, telephone users in the three communities will be able to dial each other directly without the assistance of an operator. This improvement and expansion program pro-gram planned for completion in 1955 is the largest single project to be unhertaken by the Mountain States Company in Utah since the 1939 Salt Lake City dial conversion. conver-sion. Springville's first telephone system sys-tem was opened in May, 1892. Today To-day there are almost 2250 telephones tele-phones in service here (18,750 in (Continued on page two) Telephone Co. It is interesting to note that the Springville exchange has almost tripled its number of telephones tele-phones in the eight post war years from 825 in service at the end of World War II. "The company is extremely pleased to be able to proceed with these three projects, Snell said, because it is recognized that telephone tele-phone service is vital to future progress pro-gress and growth of these areas and the state as well." |
