The game g''t..s underway at .'i p.m. For six long yeas, Springville teams have tried, in vain to conquer con-quer the mighty Lions but have yet to topple their rivals. Only victory won for the Devils , was their "morale" victory in 10-19 wln-n tlicy tied the Paysonites on their own field, 14-14. Last year the Devil.s took a merciless licking lick-ing here ,'12-14. Looking at the Springville-Pay-non grid record over a longer period, per-iod, 15 years, the Devil.s have come up with 6 wins and 3 tie games to Payson's 6 victories and ,'i ties which sets the stage for Friday's "play-off" battle. Speed vs Weight .... This year's contest at Payson looms as a hot contest. Springville will be throwing one of their heaviest heav-iest lines against the Lions in many a moon. On the other hand the Lions have a fast and talented backfield to match the Devil's weight. Consequently the winner of Friday's game will probably be the team which capitalizes most on the opponents bad breaks. Billy Bird j "V- ' t ' ' ' "A -. i V-"'' Bert Gividen Lynn Walker several plays the half ended, with the ball again near mid-field. Springville kicked to the Y high and the Y started down the field with good yardage gains through their own left tackle. Boyd Friel broke through for the Devils to throw Y high for a 10-yard loss and Springville intercepted a pass on their own 40. Power plays brought the ball down the field into scoring territory by Bird, Gividen and Walker and Bird plunged over for the score. The extra point was muffed. The third quarter ended shortly after. In the opening of the last quarter, quar-ter, the Y high ran a Springville punt from the 15 to their own 40 and marched down the field to score their only touchdown after long gains over the left and right i side of the line. The final Red Devil score came after the Devils blocked a Y Hi kick on their own 30-yard line. On the. next play, Lynn Walker, on a delayed play, covered the entire yardage for the touchdown. Kick for the extra point hit the crossbar cross-bar and fell short. Particular mention men-tion must go to Boyd Friel for his defensive and offensive play. Bird and Walker did some nice running behind good line play and blocking. block-ing. Should the Pehrson machine come out with a win against Pay-son Pay-son Friday, they will be headed for top honors in the region this year. ' Should the Devils keep their fumbles fum-bles to zero, they could come out on top. However, Payson's dogged speed may prove too much for the visitors. Be that as it may, a close battle is anticpiated. v Devils Drill Hard .... Coach Pehrson has been sending send-ing his boys through some heavy workouts and have worked on defensive play as well as speeding up the offense. Springville's big problem is keeping enough men in the backfield, where reserves are at a premium. Taking the brunt of the running attack is big Billy Bird, who has done a fine job to date. Tricky and small is the description for Lynn Walker, other ball carrier, along with Bert Gividen, who will see plenty of action Friday. Donald Watts has been working in the backfield nicely as has John Wilkerson. The line for the Devils is expected to give the Lions plenty of trouble and should prove a bulwark of strength. Devils Win over BY High . . . Coach Geo. Pehrson's eleven rang up a 19-6 victory over BY high at the Y stadium last Friday Fri-day in their first league game. Springville's first score came when Bird passed a long one to Friel who went over standing up. Bird plunged over for the extra point.
