Show Burning of Leaves Kills Fertilizer "Better not burn those leaves, advises Lyall Bryant, Linn County Iowa, farmer. "You wouldn't go out and burn up a sack of fertili-izer, fertili-izer, would you ? Bryant thinks so highly of leaves as a source of humus and plant food that he takes his pick-up baler and tractor to the Cornell College campus (at Mt. Vernon, Iowa) each fall, and "harvests" the leaf crop. Last year he picked up 144 bales of leaves to be used for bedding for farm animals. The college is happy to get rid of the leaves, and Bryant is glad to have them. Leaves pile in on out-of-the-way corner will provide you with a rich supply of leaf-mold in a year or two for your garden and house plants. |
