Show 1 REMEMBER"! BY THE OLD TIMERS ; From Mrs. Eugenia Blackburn, Tracy, Calif.: I remember when we washed with a battling stick. We would soak soiled clothes in suds, lay them on a block and beat the dirt out. From Ina J. Kellogg:, Omaha: I remember re-member when the grocer had pound .rings of pure maple sugar with a hole in the middle. From A.B.E., Waynesville, Ohio: I remember when my aunt scrubbed her hardwood kitchen floor with rush, a coarse green weed which grows in wet ground. She made a sort of brush, used sand and homemade lye soap. From E. E. Meredith, Fairmont, V. Va.: I remember when men's shoes had loops on the back to pull them on. From C. E. Pleas, Chipley, Fla.: I remember when country folks had open dug wells and many had long "well sweeps," and all used the old oaken bucket. From Mrs. Mary Stewart, Chicago: I remember when small boys wanted a magic lamp with slides. The lamp was kerosene-filled, the room darkened, a sheet-hung on the wall, and the family enjoyed the slide pictures as much as TV today. From Mrs. Estelle C. Laughlin Gering, Neb.: I remember wher grandma's courage was backed uf by such accepted mottos as "mother knows best," pretty is a; pretty does, be good and you'll be happy." There were no such term: as "momism" and "psycho neurotic." (Mail your memories to The Olc Timer, Box 340, Frankfort, Ky.) |
