Show BOMBED LINER BADLY WRECKED KOBE, Japan, Sept. 1 (U.R) The Dollar liner President Hoover, Hoov-er, bombed by a Chinese airplane off Shanghai, arrived tonight with crumpled funnels, a big hole in her deck and part of her interior wrecked. KiKht cabins and portions of a dining saloon and lounge showed, severe damage. Aboard was the body of Seaman Lloyd Haskel of Baltimore, who died of wounds while the liner made her way here. Passengers and crew had stories to tell of narrow escapes from what seemed certain death. They said that a Chinese piano circled the liner and dived to about 150 feet to drop two bombs, rise, dive and drop two more. One hit the ship on deck. The big Jiner, flagship of the Dollar line, rolled and there was confusion which Capt. George W. Lardley, the master, quickly ended. |
