Show REFUGEES FLEE SHELLED CITY ALMERTA, Spain, June 1 r.Pt Long columns of refugees, made , up of men and women who fear-: fear-: ed another German bombardment from the sea, wended northward from this ruined, deserted city today. So abject was their fear, that hundreds had spent the night in caverns in the rocky hills overlooking the Mediterranean. Among the hundred seriously wounded by the 300 shells that came crashing into this town of 45.000 population before dawn yesterday, were several Americans, Ameri-cans, members of a social service serv-ice organization. The official toll stood at 20 dead, 100 wounded critically, 50 wounded less seriously. seri-ously. Bodies still were being taken from the ruins and there ! was no accurance that the final death count would not be higher. Not one house in Almeria escaped es-caped the bombardment. Forty-nine Forty-nine houses were destroyed totally total-ly and more than 100 were useless use-less wrecks. Governor Moron described de-scribed shrapnel bursting over the city in clouds while thousands thou-sands of men, women 'and children chil-dren ran about in panic, looking for shelter. |
