Show PAUL THORN TO 0.U1T COACHING Paul Thorn, athletic director at the Springville high school tendered tender-ed his resignation from the school Monday, it was learned here today. Thorn, who has had unusual success suc-cess with his teams since taking over the coaching reins three years : ago, will go into the general contracting con-tracting business with his father, A. O. Thorn of Springville. Before beginning his coaching career at the Springville high Thorn attended the Birgham Young university, where his record in football, particularly, was outstanding. out-standing. He likewise performed in the weights on the track and palyed basketball. Famed Halfback-Paul Halfback-Paul was considered one of the greatest halfbacks ever to don the moleskins for the Cougar teams and was one of the few backfield men to be elected captain of the team. He was especially noted as a fearless line plunger and consistent con-sistent ground gainer. Basketball teams from Springville Spring-ville high have been among the topnotchers of the state sinca Thorn started coaching there, especially es-pecially in 1933 when the team was among the finalists in the state tournament. Twice they were football team from Carbon high runner-up in the region. A strong beat the Red Devils out of a chance to go to the state finals in the state quarterfinals in 193d. In track he has developed such men as Bill Wilkin, shotpure, Jack Cherrington, broad-jumper, and Dick Boorman, sprinter, among many others. The Springville coach has aided his father in work concerned with genera I contracting for many years and is well versed in that business. At present the Thorn company is working on a big job in Arizona and is figuring on several sev-eral other jobs, including one at Fish lake. |
