Show ATHLETES WILL BE INSURED AT CALIFORNIA U. BERKELEY, Cal. July 7 (U.i: The University of California next fall will inaugurate a system of insurance for the protection of its athletes, establishing a precedent in the history of American athletics, ath-letics, Kenneth Priestley, graduate grad-uate manager, said today. Long Under consideration, the plan tentatively provides for the allocation of at least $2,000 cacti year for an athletes' trust fund until an undetermined sum of several thousands of dollars is built up, to be held in escrow. Conceived after long conferences with representatives of insurance companies, who finally agreed in principle to the arrangement, William Wil-liam W. Monahan, retiring graduate grad-uate manager, presented the outline out-line of the plan to Priestley to put into operation with the be-! be-! ginning of the footoall season in September. ' Monahan and Priestly said that us far as their research into the program showed, it was the first time an American college ever had i attempted to insure its athletes against injury or death suffered ivhile engaged in sports competition competi-tion for the institution. |
