Show TEAR GAS STOPS PRISON RIOTS PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 29 (U.R) New riots In ine main eastern state penitentiary were quelled early today by tear gas. Seventeen prisoners were overcome. A number num-ber had sore heads from baseball bats wielded by guards. Disorders started at midnight. Prisoners banged on their cell doors, hammered tin cups against metal furniture, shouted -and cursed. Flaming newspapers and mattresses were thrown into the cell block walks. Electrical fixtures fix-tures were short circuited, throwing throw-ing portions of the prison into darkness. Warden Herbert (Hardboiled) Smith and 34 special guards entered en-tered the Klondike section and laid down a tear gas barrage. In this tier were 17 convicts who had been transferred here following Saturday's riots at the Graterford branch of the penitentiary. The 17 leaders were pulled from their cells, Two resisted and were clubbed. They were taken to an isolated cell block. One was armed with six-inch knife. |
