Show BELOVED CIVIC WORKER PASSES The Fourth ward chapel was filled to capify, with sorrowing friends and relatives, who assembled as-sembled Wednesday afternoon to pay final tributes of respect to Mrs. Sarah Eliza J. Thorn, 69, widow of Joseph A. Thorn, and one of the most beloved and respected re-spected women of this community, who died at her home here Sunday, Sun-day, Although she had suffered ill health for about a year, she was confined to her bed but a few days. Mrs. Thorn was horn here October Oc-tober 9, 1864, a daughter of Lorenzo Lor-enzo and Mary Hall Johnson. Her parents were among the early Springville settlers. h She has always taken an active part in civic and church affairs and won the esteem of all with whom she associated. She assisted in the organization of the local chapter of Daughters of Utah Pioneers, and acted as president of the organization, four years. She also was Utah county D. U. P. board member, four years. When the pioneer monument movement move-ment was launched, Mrs. Thorn took an active part and served as the first commitlee chairman and later as vice-chairman. She was a charter membe rand at one time president of the Alpha Al-pha Beta club. She served four years as board member of the State Federation of Women's clubs. She was at one time president presi-dent of the W. C. T. U. here. Since girlhood she had taken part in church work. She was in the primary organization 18 years serving as counselor and president. presi-dent. She also was Sunday school and Relief society class leader at various times. She took an active part in early dramatics and musical musi-cal entertainments of the community, commun-ity, and had appeared in numerous programs Here m recent years. She was married February 21, 18S4. Mr. Thorn died December 22, 1921. She was the mother of twelve children, with seven living: A. O. Thoiri, Springville; Mrs. Jennie San ford, Richfield, Idaho; Mrs. Samantha Fincn, Laramie, Wyo.; Mrs. Cora T. Bird, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Maud Erd-man, Erd-man, Murray; Mrs. Eliza Bring-hurst Bring-hurst and Mrs. Richard Thorn, Salt Lake; 14 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; a brother, J. S. Johnson, Ogden; two sisters. Mrs. Rheumia Weight, Mrs. Nora J. Clyde, and two half brothers, J. H. and J. W. Whiting, the latter two making their home with Mrs. Thorn for years after their mother died. |
