Show COX CAPTURES PLAYOFF TILT SACRAMENTO, Cat., Jan. 21 'U.i; Golfdom's leading professionals, profes-sionals, touring California for a series of mid-winter money tournaments, tour-naments, turned toward San Francisco Fran-cisco and the national match play open championship which begins Saturday. Included in the caravan of fairway fair-way nomads was Wiffy Cox, Beth- i esda, Md., professional, who held $750 prize money and the 1936 Sacramento open golf championship champion-ship to show for a four-day campaign cam-paign here. Cox won the title in an 18-hole playoff match yesterday with Wild Bill Melhorn, Louisville, Ky., pro, after each had posted identical identi-cal sub-par scores of 286 for 72 holes of medal play Friday, Saturday Satur-day and Sunday. Yesterday's defeat cost Melhorn $275, the difference between the first place purse and second money of $475. |
