Record crowds are appearing at the ball park, with much discussion as to results of games being played. play-ed. In the Commercial League a three-way tie, Johnson Service, Springville Garage and Mapleton, Maple-ton, each team winning five games and losing four, winds up the first half of their league play. A round robin playoff will star next week. These games will also figure in the per cent-age cent-age of the second half schedule. Recreational league standings are the same as last week with no games played or scheduled. In the Deacons' League the 3rd warders climbed to the top by handing the league leaders a drubbing by a score of 17 to 5. This win ties these two teams up with four wins and one loss. Mapleton and 2nd Ward still hold the cellar position, with only one win and four losses. Baseball has shown more interest in-terest in the last three weeks than ever before. The Lefty Fleiger, Jack Campbell and Royal Roy-al Binks and many others were the starting and ruination of baseball in Springville. Since that time the game has been at a very low ebb, until now. The young fellows appearing at the ball park aside from the regular players of the American Legion Junior team, are as follows: fol-lows: Ralph Reed, manager ot the so-called Century Club, the meaning being unknown to the town and probably to the team members themselves. The others are Bill Averett, B. Bringhurst, H. Smith, D. Johnson, Burnis Watts, Bert Taylor, Joe Allen, Glen Poynter. Another group of boys that call themselves the Sage Creek Clan are managed by Hoyte Baxter, Bax-ter, son of Hugh Baxter, an old-time old-time star performer of Pleasant Grove, Panguitch and Springville, Spring-ville, has organized such fellows fel-lows as Flash Gordon Pierce, D. Brown, T. Brown, Bert Cher-rington, Cher-rington, Dean Paxman, Reese Mowers, Ned Childs and Wilford Mowers. Many games have been played by these teams and some first class ball players are in the making from these groups. With a. little more public interest and a lot more finance, this town could develop three or four clubs that could hold their own in the Central Utah baseball league. Games on docket for this week Thursday, Aug. 3. 8 o'clock, Steel Plant vs. Business Men. Nine o'clock Kiwanis Club vs. American Legion. Friday, Aug. 4 8 o'clock Spanish Fork vs. Springville. Nine o'clock Wasatch All -Star Girls vs. Kolob Lumber. Springville girls' team will play Pleasant Grove girls at Pleasant Grove at 7 o'clock, Friday, Aug. 4. Result of the Springville, Pay-son Pay-son game played at Payson Tuesday Tues-day resulted in a win for the latter, 6 to 5. Runs in the first and third innings gave an early (Continued on Page Three) CITY SPORTS (Continued from Tage One) lead to the Payson Lions that was never overtaken by the visit- j ors. ; This loss threw Springville out-of out-of running' for the second half championship. If Springville defeats the Utah-Idaho Utah-Idaho of Spanish Fork, Friday night, it will throw Eureka and Spanish Fork into a tie for first place for the second half championship. champ-ionship. Eddie says the second half will be tied up and he don't mean maybe. |
