Show Workers Returned To Payrolls In General Re-Employment Move Closed Plants To Re-open; Regular Employees Em-ployees Assured of Their Jobs For 1931; More Men To Be Recalled Soon. By UNITED PRESS ', Business activity at the start of 1931 was marked by the return of thousands of workers to the jobs they lost in the closing months of 1930, with railroads leading in the re-eni-pToyment-move, United Press dispatches reported today. -Many of the workers were rehired on a part-time basis. The Chicago and Northwestern railroad returned 7,000 men to its payroll, the Monon lines between 600 and 800, the Rock Island issued work calls to 2,500, and the Santa Fe to 3,000; The. Missouri Pacific and Missouri-Kansas-Texas rehired re-hired 1,400 at Sedalia, Mo., and the Missouri Pacific alone took back 200 at Kansas City, and the Southern Pacific gave iobs to 8.500. Detroit automobile plants, includ-i ing the Ford Motor company, added 22,000 workers, and Ford branches at Denver and St, Paul; 1,930. Eleven Cleveland industries, six connected with Automotive Products, Pro-ducts, restored 1,800 employes. MILWAUKEE, Wis., Jan. 5 (U.P) Employes', of the Kohler Manufacturing Manu-facturing company and the National Nation-al Enameling and Stamping company com-pany were notified today that their jobs are secure for the duration of 1931. SPRINGFIELD, 111., Jan. 6 (lH The Illinois Watch company, employing em-ploying several hundred men, reopened re-opened today aitcr a shutdown of several weeks. Six of the 'companies employing additional addi-tional men are connected with the automobile and rubber industries, two manufacture machine products and three are clothing and cloth manufacturers. - It is estimated that within the next week more than 5,000 men will have returned to work In northeastern Ohio steel mills. |
