(CUT Blizzards Bliz-zards and cold rains broke the mild winter in middle and southwest states today. A snowstorm swirled over central cen-tral Illinois, piling deep drifts In some sections and moving northward north-ward toward the Great Lakes. The heaviest snow of the season blanketed large areas of Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. Snow and sleet added considerable consider-able precipitation to the lower Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio valleys. . The approaching blizzard was horalded et Chicago by high winds that blew a gale across Lake Michigan, Mich-igan, churning up huge waves that beat on retaining walls and caused shore drives to be closed for the protection of motorists. ! Windows were blown out of stores along Michigan avenue on the lake front and trees were torn i up in parka bordering the lake, i;. Close behind the gale a heavy snow storm hit Chicago before noon. The wind abated, slightly but. whipped the snow into drifts that began to hamper traffic and. make streets dangerous in less than an hour. The weather bureau predicted the snow would last all day and tonight and be "quite heavy," |
