Show PROBE FATAL PLANE CRASH ! Newspapers Criticize A i r Lines 16-Hour Secrecy Kejrarding Lost. Pilot. SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 25 (I'.i;) Investigation into the cause of the fatal Boeing United Air Lines plane crash which killed Norman V. Potter, 36, veteran pilot, early Monday, was started today. Carrol D. Doak, department of commerce, aeronautics division,, inspector, was expected to arrive in Salt Lake City today from Chey- , enne, Wyo., to aid in the probe. Potter crashed in a snowstorm ; 14 miles west of the Salt Lake air- , port and within 100 yards of a primary pri-mary highway. The wreckage was ! not discovered until Tuesday morning, morn-ing, 30 hours after the crash. Boeing officials were convinced today that the veteran pilot had crashed when he attempted a "swing back" to get out of the storm. They said Potter apparently apparent-ly thought he was high in the air. Instead he was skimming just above the ground, which he could not see because of the storm. When his plane tilted as he made a sharp turn, one wing scraped the ground and precipitated the crash. Salt Lake newspapers were critical criti-cal over failure of United Air line officials to make public the search for the lost air mail flier until 16 hours after the pilot was reported missing. |
