Show when a boy or man has comleted them, he is in no way a part of the army, national guard or other aimed forces. He is but a civilian, belter trained, understanding better, bet-ter, more tolerant of others through knowing more of life, and better equipped to take care of himself. THE C. M. T. C. One factor in the training of the youth of today which is frequently overlooked is the Cllizens' Military Training Camp which, for this area, Is held annually in July at Fort Douglas. The C. M. T. C. gives training for citizenship instead of training for soldiers, although the activities are necessarily militry nnd the man or boy is under strict military discipline such as has been found to be good for both his health and his morals. This building-up process under-;aken under-;aken by Uncle Sam is a gigantic mie. In a way it is a philanthropic mterprlse, for annually some 30,000 routus are taken to camp for a month's free vacation nnd given good sport, an education In many things beside the miltary, and good healthy exercise such as can be obtained ob-tained in few places. And yet the youth of Utah county has strangely failed to appreciate the advantage offered, has fallen far behind his friends in the rest of the country in taking advantage of the privileges extended. And this is surprising, when considering consider-ing the many different kinds of vacation va-cation activities the camp affords athletic competition in baseball, swimming, track, calisthenics, gun-ntry, gun-ntry, military drill and instruction, practical engineering proglems, radio instruction, excursions through the country nnd camping. When a boy is through with his month of training it is impossible to say which of the many features at the camp has done the most for him exercise and drill, that have quickened his mind nnd muscle, the keen rivalry for distinction in military excellence and behavior, the exciting competitions in sport and drill, or the association with so many other young men under the rules of a well-ordered army camp. All of these things are a benefit to the civilians and all are involved In military training. And yet, |
