Show PRAISES ART IN SPRINGVILLE "Apprecaition of Art" Is Topic of Springville High School Speaker. I Dr. George Smart of Salt Lake I City was the speaker at the Springville Spring-ville high school studentbody meet- ing Friday morning April 11, his theme being "Appreciation of Art." Referring to the Springville high school national art exhibit, Mr. Smart said, "I am wondering if the people of Springville can imagine the iiiagnltute of this exhibit, for htere never has been an art exhibit in the western states that surpasses this except the one at the World Fair at San Francisco. There never has ever been a school in the world that has ever acomplished any thing like this exhibit." He gave a short biographical sketch of the life of John Hafen and told of his struggle through poverty before his work was recognized ; of his moving from Springville to Salt Lake City and other places and after not getting any recognition in the larger cities finally came back to Springville through the invitation of M. E. Crnndal, Sr. Mr. Smart here paid a tribute to the people of Springville as being the first to recognize rec-ognize the work of the artist. "The poeple of Springville were the first to recognize his great work." he said, "they bought his pictures, sent them east and got him recognized." He also said that C. E. Dallin was never honored as an artist nor given recognition by Salt Lake City or Ogden with the same appreciation that Springvilie honored him. After expuaining in a general way bow an appreciation for art is developed de-veloped he referred to the points from which a picture is judged, from an artists standpoint as follows: actuality of form, including character charac-ter of form and model ; space, including in-cluding height, breadth and depth; color: movement, including rhythm, and rhythm of tone: perspective, including in-cluding aerial and lineal and full canvas. A ladies quartet composed of TTelon Palfreyman. Inez Wheeler. Helen Salisbury and Margaret Parker Park-er rendered n selection and was followed fol-lowed by a male quartet composed ' of Richard and Howard Thorn. Ey-rou Ey-rou Burt and Lowery Anderson. |
