Show MAY PURCHASE JACKSON HOLE ELK FOR TIMP Provo Man Predicts Utah Will Be Greatest Big Game State. If Timpanogos district is to have, nny oik, they must be brought in from Jackson hole country. This is the opinion of Mark Anderson An-derson and Dean H. V. Hoyt of the Kiwanis elk committee after attending attend-ing the meeting of stockgrowers ax Ncphi Tuesday night at which arrangements ar-rangements were made for the killing kill-ing of not to exceed 50 old bull elk. A recommendation may be made by the committee to the Kiwanlb club for the purchase of a car load of elk from the Jackson hole country to be released in the foothills ol Timpanogos above Aspen Grove. Although it is believed that the shooting of the 50 elk around the Mt. Nebo district will do a great deal towards distributing the elk into several sectionos of the state, it is doubtful if any number will fina their way to the Timpanogos district. dis-trict. Mr. Anderson, who is perhaps belter bel-ter acquainted with the elk situation situa-tion in the west than any other In Utah, is very enthusiastic about the possibilities of making Timpanogos one of the hunting places for big game. He is of the opinion that the big game connection with the scento loop around the majestic mountain will do more to attract the attention of the tourists than any other thing. "Elk are doing remarkably well in j Utah much better than in the Yel-j Yel-j lowstone region," said Sir, Ander- Son. liWe should not regret that they are scattering themselves over ; a larger area. We are sure to have j more elk in Utah within the next j five years than will be found in the (state of Wyoming. It appears that ! nothing can srop us from becoming ' the leading big game state of the I union if we give these elk only reasonable rea-sonable consideration and care. Wyoming is fast losing her lead as a big game state. "The Nebo range will never be a prosperous cattle range. Even If the elk be entirely removed the range will never support the cattle I in the manner desired by the stock-i stock-i men. However, the range is ideal ( for elk. This is shown .from the fact that the cattle are thin and the elk are fat. "The cattlemen should not forget the fact also that elk are worth not less than $60 each and that there is no expense attached in producing an elk while the cost of producting a steer is very near equal to the selling price these days especially when grazed in such a rough area as the Nebo district. "The decision of the Nephi meeting meet-ing to kill 50 elk is a wise one. It will not only reduce the size of the herd this winter but the greatest good will come from the effect that a little hunting will have on tlu distribution of the elk. Ten days hunting and I am sure no one will complain of a congestion of elk on the Nebo district. The elk will spit into very small bunhes and scatter ocver a wide area hiding out only in the most inaccessible spots where cattle seldom penetrate to any extent ex-tent if at all. It is not an uncom mon thing for bunted elk in the Jackson Hole country to travel 50 miles without a stop in getting back to the state game preserve just south of the Yellowstone." |
