Show Spanish Fork Dons lose tourney berth on ineligibility ruling the day's upset in whipping West 74-67. Orem lost a squeaker to strong East 53-51. Games continue Friday and Saturday at the Ute fieldhouse. Spanish Fork was ruled ineligible in-eligible to compete in the Class A basketball tournament after having played a player in the Provo and Payson games who had been playing Jr. M Men basketball during the season. The Region Five's Board of Managers (which includes principals prin-cipals of all schools in the region) re-gion) made the first decision and it was then taken directly direct-ly to the Utah High School Activities Ac-tivities Association Board of Director in Salt Lake City, who upheld the Region's decision. Although the Spanish Fork team, one of the best in the school's history, won both games, the ruling kept the Dons from entering the meet now being held. No high school team member can play for his school and at the same time participate in another league whether he be playing on the varsity team or the junior varsity, it was pointed out. With SpanishFork out of the tournament, Payson and Orem were automatically put in as the other two teams representing rep-resenting Region 5 along with Provo, the winner. Two of the three clubs won opening games at the meet Tuesday. Provo drubbed Tooele 58-41 while Payson. pulled |
