Emmet Bird to the State Department of Highways, High-ways, expressing the opinion of Springville business men that the proposed parallel parking in the city's Main Street, would jepardise business, busi-ness, the mayor has received the following letter from the department. "Dear Mayor Bird. "The staff has given careful care-ful consideration to your letter of June 21 in regard to your proposal to terminate highway improvements on US 89-91 at Center Street and your opposi- and will be happy to confer con-fer with you in order to bring a solution to the problem so that this project may move forward." Very truly yours, J. Edward Johnston Deputy Director for Planing Plan-ing From this letter the city is told in so many words that unless the town conforms with the plans of the state highway department, no improvements to the road wall be forthcoming. forthcom-ing. There is no definite com- ;tfwmn4- flint V,rt rt.M- r.y tion to parallel panting. "In view of the Road Commission's Com-mission's firm policy limiting any further highway improvements improve-ments in urban areas unless parallel parking is established, establish-ed, we have no other choice but to advise that unless this can be worked out and parallel parking agreed to, the pro-the pro-the proposed project will be deferred. "There is no proof that parallel par-allel parking has been injurious injur-ious to businesses. We have found in most cases where a claim of loss was made that there were other factors than parallel parking present. "There is no question but what the public generally does not support parallel parking and for this reason business firms are prone to approve its use. The question is not whether whe-ther or not it is a matter of public preference but rather raised portion of main street would be taken off. Business men believe that parallel parking would present a major problem here in winter win-ter time especially and they have expressed their views as definitely opposed to it. Some have offered a solution to the problem- suggesting that the curb and gutter be placed back to the sidewalk, doing away with the space in which lawn and sometimes weeds grow between the walks and the curb. This, in the opinion of the businessmen would wrid-en wrid-en the street, give more parking park-ing space and ficilitate traffic. Tree incident Some business men and and many citizens have not forgotten the ultimatum handed hand-ed down by the state road officials of-ficials when they informed the nifv that imlpsc nil thA fre.q handle traffic with the least congestion and maximum of safety. "I am sure that' if we proceeded pro-ceeded with this project we could overcome the problems resulting from the crown on the roadway. "We will appreciate your further review of this matter on Main street were cut down, the new street lights would) not be installed. It will be noted that Spanish Span-ish Fork retained their trees as did Brigham City. Citizens have also brought to the attention of city officials offic-ials the report that the state road commission would not allow a sign across Main street such as that Springville had informing tourists of the booth on the city park. However How-ever a similar sign has been placed by Provo in two places on the highway and another is in American Fork designating designat-ing the site of their tourist booth. |
