Last year's Fourth of July holiday traffic toll was 440 lives. Drownings and boating mishaps claimed 160 lives. Other accidents, including fire-works, firearms, heat exhaus-tion and falls killed more than 100 persons. "The Fourth of July is al- - most always celebrated out-doors," Pyle said. "This means travel, swimming and sporting events, coupled with their in-herent hazards. To get the most out of all these activities we must remember safety safe driving and safe play means going by the rules for the protection of yourself, your family and others." Pyle stressed two points: 1. Everyone learn to swim. It's the best posible insurance against drowning. 2. Install and use automobile seat belts for all driving, near home and on trips. "Seat belts will reduce in-jury and help save lives in case of accidents," said Pyle. "But the need for accident prevention before the fact cannot be stressed too strong-ly, he said. "On this 185th aniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, let us all strive to free ourselves from the tyranny of accidents." Nothing is more honorable than a grateful heart. Seneca. Overlimits bring fishing arrests Violations of fish and game laws covering the opening weekend of the fishing season show a number of arrests be-ing made for overlimits of fish. Justice courts take a dim view of such violations and heavy fines are usually asses-sed the guilty parties. Limits should be respected in the interest of fair play and a more equitable distribution of fish to all license holders. Possession and bag limits are listed, as follows, in the 1961 angling proclamation: The daily bag limits may in-clude but not exceed the fol-lowing: Trout, or Salmon, in the ag-gregate ten fish or seven pounds and one fish, whichever is caught first. Greyling fifteen fish or seven pounds and one fish, whichever is caught first. Black bass, white bass and walleyed pike, in the aggre-gate ten fish or fifteen pounds and one fish, whichever is caught first. Whitefish or catfish twenty fish or twenty pounds and one fish, whichever is caught first. Bag limit and the possession limit is one and the same thing. Incidentally, there is no size limit on fish in Utah and, of course, there are no limits of any kind on such fish as yel-low perch, chub, sucker, sun-fis- h, crappie or carp. In 1960, lead-zin- c were gold, silver and copper, with a total value of $4,764,000. These extra values are the lifeblood of the few active lead-line mines in Utah. Without them, the mines would have to close down. New exotic bird shipment sent Another shipment of exotic game birds under a coopera-tive agreement between the Utah and Nevada Departments of Fish and Game arrived here last week. The final shipment of birds included ten common sand grouse and twenty imperial sand grouse wild-trapp- from their native environment in India. This shipment marks the first and only importation of this latter species known in the United States. During the past three years the Department's game farm at Price has been the recipient of several hundred native Asian game birds. Under terms of the two-stat- e agreement, experimental stocks of common sand grouse, grey francolin, black francolin, see see partridge and now imperial sand grouse have been sent to the farm for experimentation in rearing brood stocks of these new game species for in-troduction into presently game bird range in Utah and Nevada. According to a Nevada game bird biologist who has been as-signed in India for the past three years to capture these birds, all species should fit well into the arid pattern of the western United States and should inhabit areas where no game bird species are pre-sently known to exist. |
