It is a beautiful, fash ionable resort with fabulous homes and apartment buildings. His mother-in-law is a million-naire million-naire and has a terrific summer sum-mer home there. We were all invited, together with the inlaws, in-laws, for lunch, Peruvian style white gloved serving men, etc. many courses of fabulous food served on silver. Monday and Tuesday Carlos took us all over Lima visiting the many places of interest museums, parks, markets, seaport sea-port at Calle, etc. We had lunch one day at the National Club, very exclusive, and he arranged a guest card for us during our stay here. Wednesday we flew to Cuzeo, capital of the Incas, a tour of the city and the fabulous ruins at various places nearby. What terrific stone work; nothing like it', in the world, and the people still wear their native dress and live as they did ages ago. Thursday we went on a one-car one-car train to.Machu Pichu, about 70 miles from Cuzro, high above the beginning of the steaming Amazon jungle. This ancient Inca city, discovered by an American, Am-erican, Hirum Bingham in 1911, is perched on a most unlikely narrow peak with cliffs dropping drop-ping 2,000 feet to the river on both sides as it makes a horseshoe horse-shoe bend before plunging into the wild Amazon Basin. The stone buildings and terraces for growing vegetables, etc., are of such craftsmanship it is hard to believe. The stores are laid up with mortar fitting perfectly, per-fectly, yet have as many as 12 corners to a single stone and some weighing as much as 200 tons. Friday in Cuzro was "Good Friday," their biggest celebration celebra-tion of the year. It is like Christmas with altars in the 22 churches being beautifully decorated dec-orated with flowers, drapes, ribbons, silver, silver foil, lights candles, etc., in original and varied ideas. At dusk they start their procession pro-cession with music played by the local army band playing a strange Cuzco tune that is catchy and stirring. I believe that there is no where else in the world just like this. Saturday we flew back to Lima went to a show and had dinner at the National Club. Sunday, Carlos took us to his city home where we had lunch with his family, who have moved mov-ed back from Ancon school started this week and summer is officially over. After lunch we went to the horse races at the new Lima track what a place most modern, four stories stor-ies with a battery of elevators. We didn't pick the right horses, however. Yesterday, Monday, we spent the day seeing more of Lima and had dinner at a charming colonial place called "Trece Monadas" (13 coins) with Dr. Fenton and his wife. Dr. Fen-ton Fen-ton is an archeologist and author au-thor whom we met here at the hotel. After dinner we visited at the home of a young assistant assist-ant to Carlos named Mendoza, a very likeable fellow who has also spent some time showing us about. Today we took a ten-hour train ride from the tropics to the arctic and back to the tropics.- This was on the highest standard guage railroad in the |
