Show Cougars play Cal Poly in Friday night game at BYU stadium Cal Poly, a comparatively unknown football power from the West Coast, will provide Brigham Young University with its first test of the football foot-ball season Friday in a night game at Provo. The first of 11 games on the Cougar schedule, the kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. on the home field. Coach LeRoy Hughes' Must angs , co-favorite in the CCAA, could up their stock considerably consider-ably this weekend by beating the rather thin squad at BYU. It's no secret this is one game the San Luis Obispo club has been pointing for since last spring. Last Saturday the Cougars staked their first full scrimmage scrim-mage of the season with an hour-plus session in the sta- aium. Ail or me u-pius players play-ers saw some action. Stevens and members of his staff found some satisfaction in the overall ' play of the squad. All of the quarterbacks Bud Belnap, Eldon Fortie, and Brent Hancock passed well, and Fortie For-tie looked very good when he carried the ball. Linemen who won some praise were ends Merlin Smith, Don Petersen and Gene Frantz; tackles Martin Seneca and Wes Vorwaller; and .guards Mike Conrad, Steve Sullivan, and Bruce Kochevar. Jack Gifford and Bruce Samples Sam-ples showed strength in the running game as did fullback Dick Darling. Thursday's schedule will consist con-sist of some rather light work in the afternoon, in preparation for Friday's game. Several BYU players are still on the 'np-contact' list, and one or two who are still limping around may have to forego Friday's opening game. |
