Mbr-ri- e Student makes Gallant. typing record In a recent assembly held at LDS Business College, Miss Lorraine Taylor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hal L. Taylor of 750 South 4th East, Springville, received an award for a per-fect five-minu- te typewriting test at 59 words a minute. Miss Taylor is a graduate of Springville High School. The roots of all evil seem to Santa Claus planning visits soon to two LDS wards at Mapleton Santa Claus is coming to the two Mapleton Wards Saturday evening. He will visit members of the Mapleton Ward in the recreation hall at 5:30 and the Second Ward in the church at that time. An entertaining pro-gram has been arranged for each assembly and each guest will be given a treat. The civic organizations of the city are working with the wards in this enterprise. The long dining tables were centered with clever arrangements of frosted pine branches and cones under the direction of Mrs. Beth Jensen. The Relief Soc-iety was in charge of serving a delicious supper. The supper was followed by a program in the chapel with President Reed Bennett and his counselors, Howard Stevens and Arvil Bird in charge. Music was furnished by the old Mapleton male quartet consisting of Car-ol Waters, Glenn Holley, How-ard Waters and Leslie Houtz. The guest speaker of the eve-ning was the gifted Professor McKinley of the speech depart-ment of BYU who spoke of Christmas and the Christmas Spirit. Well over 300 guests were present. Mrs. Cora Clegg was hostess to the members of the Maple-ton Camp DUP at her home Thursday afternoon at their annual Christmas party. She was assisted by Mrs. Lora Bird and Mrs. Birdie Nielson in ser-ving refreshments to 22 mem-bers and one guest. Gifts were exchanged. An interesting les-son on Pioneers was given by Mrs. Alice Johnson followed by p. history of her grandfather by Mrs. Cora Clegg. A Christmas story was given by Mrs. Am-anda Binks. Citizens of Mapleton met at a budget hearing in Memorial Hall Monday evening where the budget for the ensuing year was explained by City Recorder Norris T. Binks. A budget of $75,345.00 was adopted for the ensuing year. Eleven Mapleton Jaycees and their partners enjoyed a Christ-mas banquet in Memorial Hall last Saturday evening with Mrs. Neno Antonino acting as chairman. Assisting her were Mrs. Norman Young, Mrs. Niel Stiener and Mrs. Douglas Brown. Seasonal motif centered the long serving table and a large Christmas tree lent at-mosphere. Gifts were exchang-ed and a musical program was presented by Larry Magliaccio and his group. Going away gifts were pre-sented to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Young who are moving to Tre-mont-where he is employed, and to Mr. and Mrs. Carl An-gus who are moving to Wash-ington where he has rejoined the Coast Guard as a lieuten-ant, j.g. The Mapleton Busy Finger Club members were entertain-ed at a Christmas party and quilting at the home of Mrs. Jennie Dart of Spanish Fork last week. A delicious hot din-ner was served to the follow-ing: Mrs. Zina Dibble, Mrs. Clinton Young, Mrs. Nellie Wiscombe, Mrs. John Parry, Mrs. Ruel Jensen, Mrs. Robert Snow, Mrs. Gladys Johnson, Mrs. Florence Stone, Mrs. Vance Gividen, Mrs. Jennie Tew and Mrs. Rhoda Thomas. Gifts were exchanged. Mrs. Preston Hooper and Mrs. Lavere Tippetts of Map- - leton and Mrs. Tom Smith of Springville accompanied their husbands to Salt Lake City re- - cently when the men sang with the Mendelssohn Chorus. Mr. and Mrs. P. W: Madsen were Sunday dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Aar- - on (Buss) Williams. I Art City Bowling 1 and Recreation I 45 West 2nd South sM School gets ready for holiday season Richard Rife brought a beau-tiful Christmas tree to Mrs. Pyper's Second grade which his mother and aunt made. It has ruffles of green net with small ball ornaments sown on the edge of the ruffles. There is an angel on the top and a big red bow on the bottom. We all say "Thank you, Mrs. Rife." Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone! In Mrs. LeRoy's second grade Janet Hiatt and Tommy Con-rad have their 8th birthday this week. The class is really having fun getting ready for Christmas. They have decorated their room and are making presents. They are also learn-ing songs and poems for a program for their parents. Mr. Allred's Sixth grade has been learning part singing of various kinds among their Christmas songs. They were in--i vited to sing some numbers at the Eleventh Ward Sunday eve-ning meeting this past Sunday. They have each brought a "white elephant" all wrapped up in Christmas packages. They make up some of the Christmas decorations in their room and will be exchanged Friday. Mr. Poulsen's Fifth graders are proud of Stanley Weight. Stanley won the "Who and Clues" contest last week. He received ten dollars. They just about have their room ready for Christmas. They have been doing Christmas art for two weeks. On Friday our school is hav-ing their annual Christmas song fest in which all the clas-ses will take part. It surely is a lot of fun. On Wednesday, the junior high chorus is coming to sing for us.
