Mrs. Arvil Lowe suffered a painful cut on her head Mon-day on a buckle of a pair of overalls. . . Springville's 24th of July celebration will include a historic parade, a barbeque, a pioneer program and sports. Mr. and Mrs. Leo Weight are the proud parents of a baby daughter born July 10. . . Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thorpe have a girl born July 3. . . Mrs. Emma Long has been convalescing at the Minor Home from a severe illness and has now returned home to their apartment in the Hungerford building. Queen candidates for the 24th of July are running close with 554 votes for Inez Starr, First ward queen; Marie Jen-sen of Mapleton 525; Vesta Anderson, second ward 523; Ruth Johnson, Third ward 520; and Alberta M e n de n h a 1 1, Fourth ward 530. 15 YEARS AGO Word concerning the fate of Lt. Vernal Bird received here this week stated that he was a pilot on a A-2- 0 Havoc plane and after strafing the target his plane disappeared fro m formation near Wewak, New Guinea. Also a letter from Floyd Crandall, who was in the area and made investiga-tion into Lt Bird's death, said his plane was shot down and only one of the crew was saved. He had been flying overseas since February. An SOS call is going out this week from the Chamber of Commerce to secure cherry pickers for orchards in this area. . . Over seven hundred dollars in war bonds were sold by Springville in the Fifth drive which just concluded, Mayor Emil Ostlund announces. Highlighting social events of the week was the wedding of Miss Helen Clegg, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Clegg and Richard K. Miner, son of Mr, and Mrs. Floyd Miner of this city. . . Miss Dorthy Weight and Allan Stewart were married June 26 in Alexandria, La, said word received here. 20 YEARS AGO Announcement is made of the marriage of Miss Mary Perrero, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Perrero of Helper and Frank Carnesecca, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Carne-secca, which took place June 24, at Provo. Due to the decrease in WPA labor, the canning center will operate only two days a week hereafter. . . A parade, horse-pullin- g contests and a program will highlight Mapleton's 24th celebration. Ralph Weight guessed when the ice would melt in the J. C. Penney window and received a blanket. The ice- required 50 hours 44 minutes and melted at 11:14 a.m. . . . Mrs. Flor-anc- e Stone announces the mar-riage of her daughter Vera to Wm. R. Snell son of Prof, and Mrs. W. H. Snell of Provo.
