Show FOUGHT FOR HIS LIFE. Chief of Police of Dillon, Mont., Has Battle With Hobos. In a fight, with a gang of nine hobos, Chief of Police Stone of Dillon. Mont., shot and instantly killed the leader. They were camped in the willows at the south edge of town, and when the chief, in making his rounds, appeared in that vicinity, ho was viciously attacked at-tacked by the entire gang. They were armed with clubs and stones, except the leader, who had an ugly gun. When attacked Chief Stone walked into his assailants and was knocking thorn right and left when their leader took a shot, at the chief, the bullet grazing his neck. In self-defense the officer then drew liis own gun, and before the hobo could fire again shot him through tho heart and secured the big revolver he carried. At this juncture Policeman Grace arrived upon the scene, and after an obstinate fight all the gang were lodged in jail except one. who suoceeeded in escaping.
