Show ASSASSINATE RULERS KING AND QUEEN OF SERVIA MURDERED. Unpopularity of Queen Said to Have Caused Slaughter of Royal Family and Selection of New King. The king and queen of Servia have been assassinated and a new government govern-ment set up, thus ending the Obreno-vltch Obreno-vltch dynasty, which has ruled Servia for almost a century. It is generally claimed that the assassination and change of government was the result of the unpopularity of Queen Draga. According to the best information obtainable from Belgrade, Servia, the assassination was the result of a military mil-itary conspiracy, which had the sympathy sym-pathy of a majority of the Servian people, and was carried out In the early hours of Thursday morning, when King Alexander, Queen Draga, her two brothers and several ministers minis-ters met death. Prince Peter Karageorgevitch, the pretender to the throne, has been proclaimed pro-claimed king by the army, and there Is every reason to believe that this decision will be confirmed by the Servian Serv-ian parliament which has been summoned sum-moned to meet on June 15. The revolution revo-lution was executed without any opposition op-position on the part of the people of Belgrade, and the capital and the country remain quiet. While the main outlines of the events which took place within the royal palace are known, the details are conflicting, owing to the extraordinary extraor-dinary secrecy with which the plot was contrived and carried out. The chief conspirators were all men of high rank, who acted in concert with the army. The participation of the latter in the assassinations that blotted blot-ted out the Obernovltch dynasty, which has ruled Servia, with a short intermission, for nearly a century, is mainly due to the attitude of King Alexander and his consort toward the officers of the army, whom he always al-ways treated with scant courtesy. His desire to remove the war school from Belgrade to Shebatz particularly gave the officers offense Alexander I was born August 14, 1876, and succeeded his father, King Milan I, upon his abdication March 6, 1889. At that time Alexander was in his minority, so a regency was established estab-lished to last until he should attain his eighteenth year. When but 17, however, how-ever, he overthrew the regency and assumed the royal prerogative upon his own authority. On August 5, 1900, he married "Draga Maschln, who was born September 23, 1867. A previous attempt was made a few years ago to reinstate the Karageorgevitch Karageor-gevitch dynasty, which has not been In power since 1858, when Servia was taken under protection of the European Euro-pean powers. It was immediately suppressed, sup-pressed, however, the leader being captured and killed. Prince Alexis Karageorgevitch denied that he was a party to the ill-timed event. The time of the assassinations is given giv-en officially as 2 a. m. It is expected that the skuptschlna (Servian parliament! parlia-ment! will confirm the proclamation by the army of Prince Peter Karageorgevitch Kara-georgevitch as king of Servia The newspapers forecast a better future for Servia, and the new state of things Is heartily welcomed by the masses. Nothing definite has been decided regarding re-garding the burial of the dead. One report of the tragedy states that the king and queen quarreled an! In a fight between supporters of the two the royal couple were killed, the king himself killing Queen Draga, but this report is generally considered as Idle gossip. |
