Show Till COPPER DDES PIER WORK Important development has taken place In the Butte camp in the last few years that seems to have escaped eastern interest, inter-est, accord inc to the Boston News Bureau. Bu-reau. The mines in this, the createst of ail copper districts, have until recently been almost entirely confined to Butte Hill. There has, to be sure, been a great widening of the known mineralized area, formerly supposed to be confined to a comparatively small acreace, as evidenced by the development of such properties as the Badger State and Butte & Superior, but. nevertheless, there has been nothing of any importance except on the Hill itself. it-self. In the last few years, however, on the fVu to the east of Butte Hill, there have been developments of no mean importance. impor-tance. Here, on land covered by "wash." a number of companies have been piek- ing up tne extension of the tuitte Hill veins. The Anaconda itself has several claims in this district whore recent developments devel-opments have been most encouraging. In claims centering around the Sarsrield shaft, the North Hutte has. judging by recent indications, perhaps its best chance of a train becoming a consistently prohiable producer. The favorable developments on the East Butte property are rather better known. The Tuolumne company had formerly a very small acreace on the Butte Hill, j from which for a few years it had made substantial profits, but latterly the workings work-ings had reached too great a depth to be profitable. This company, by exchange of stock, has acquired the Colusa -Leonard Extension, and the Butte Main Range properties, which it now entirely owns, comprising about eighty acres. This property is traversed by four weH-defined weH-defined veins. A shaft sunk to a depth of SCO feet has opene 1 one of these, knon fts the "Spread Peiisht." on the TOO and Sum -foot levels. On the 00-foot levd the ore bodies exceed 5"o fee: in lencth and vary in width from five to thirty-rive feet. From these workings the company pro-, pro-, duced last year L' 3, '"""" tons of ore averaging aver-aging 2i per cent copper, with coed silver sil-ver values, and. in spi'e of the f.u't that 4? per cent of the operating expenses was devoted to development and construction, the company earned all expenses, with a balance of $27, 00. That is, within trr-'-e years of beginning development, tins property was on a s-"-lf -s-:p:ortlr.g basis. , In the first five months of this year has shipped 15") tons of ore, avmu'Inc 2!i Per cent copper and S ounces of silver, and on a very m :h lower meti market ha" more than earned all expenses. I The next few months promise to be n I very interesting time in the history of this compinv. The Main Range shaft has been sunk to a depth of Pvm feet, and a crosscut on this level should reach the vein before the end of Sep" ember. If it encounters the same ore values as it did on the unper levels, which the leaching would indicate, it will put In sight in a mininc: sense a very considerable tonr.sire of commercial ore. Two months nf;er ; that, a crosscut on the K'00-foot U-.-e to which the shaft Is now bent? sunk, sro'uld tap the vein. It la proposed, also, to extend ex-tend this crosscut to one of the paraibd veins on the south, which in the upper: 'eve's had given good promise, and a No I to make a conriect'on with the Colusa-Lennard Colusa-Lennard extension sha. ft. With these connections mad-, the company com-pany should be able to ship enough tonnage ton-nage to make a c oo d showing of p r o fit . |
