Shortly after Bates was paroled last January, after having served one year of a second-degree burglary sentence of from one to twenty years, the special agent department of the Denver & Rio Grande railroad reported to Mr. Storrs that It had evidence that Bates had broken open a box car and stolen some shoes. After leaving Salt Lake, Bates had gone to Rush Valley, in the southern part of the state, where he was working with relatives. When Mr. Storrs attempted to find Bates and inquired at Rush Valley, Val-ley, he had disappeared and was not heard of until his arrest In Pocatello several sev-eral days ago. The criminal record of Bates commenced, com-menced, according to Mr. Storrs, when he was first sent to the reform school a number of years ago. He served his first term in tiie Utah state prison on a charge of third -degree burglary. His next of- fense was the stealing of a. quantity of oats from a warehouse in Salt Lake, for which he received a sentence of from one to twenty years. It was a parole on this sentence that lie violated by selling liquor to the Indians. He is about 35 years old. An investigation will be made immediately immedi-ately by Mr. Siorrs to ascertain whether Bates committed the box car robbery of which he is charged by the Denver & Rio Grande. |
