Show NEW SUPERINTENDENT WILL ASSUME DUTIES Dr. E. G. Gowans Retires ; G. N. Childs Takes Up Work Today. ' The close of the school year of 191S-1919 was marked yesterday by numerous changes In the post of superintendeneies, Including that in the office of' state superintendent super-intendent of public instruction. Dr. E. G. Gowans, who has held the office for the biggest part of two terms, has resigned re-signed and George X. Child, assistant superintendent su-perintendent of the Salt Lake City schools becomes superintendent, effective today. Employees of the state school- offices presented Dr. Gowans with a gold watch as a mark of the esteem in which they had come to regard him during hi3 six and one-half years' tenure of office. The presentation speech was made by Mrs. Rhea Davis. The other members, of the committee were Mrs. Mayme Nelson, Miss Jean Cox, Miss Mary West and Miss Chloe Nelson. The men who joined in contributing to the token of esteem were Mosiah Hall, state school inspector; E. J. Norton, head of the school office forces; F. W. Kirkham, state director of vocational voca-tional education; I. B. Ball, state supervisor super-visor of agricultural education, and Joseph Jo-seph Monson, advisory architect of the state school building commission. Many school districts throughout the state are changing superintendents. I. Daniel Stewart succeeds J. A. Washburn in Duchesne county, who succeeds W. T. P.eid in Emerv county; J. T. Worlton succeeds suc-ceeds J. M. Mills in Granite district; H. Claude Lewie succeeds L. J. Nnttall, Jr., in Iron county. Nut tall going to Nebo, where he succeeds J. Preston Creer; Parley Par-ley Woolsey goes to San Juan to succeed i J. B. Harris; E. M. Reid goes to Tooele, where he succeeds J. U. Hicks, and B. A. Fowler succeeds W. N. petterson at Og-den. Og-den. R. C. Merrill has resigned as superintendent superin-tendent In the Kane county schools and W. H. Manning- in the North Summit , school district, but the state offices have j not been advised as to their succesors. |
