Show if S HAS TIFF ITfSFMIl Identifies Himself With i Anti-Clark Forces in Revival Re-vival of Old Quarrel. Special to The Tribune. WASHINGTON, D. C, March 13. Representative Rep-resentative James H. Mays of Utah is the man denounced by ex-Speaker Champ Clark as "a malicious liar." Denunciation De-nunciation of the Utah congressman, I though not by name, was brought about by a statement issued by Representative Representa-tive Mays Sunday night, in which he attacked at-tacked the former speaker on behalf of the Democratic reorganization committee commit-tee of the next house, and charged Speaker Clark with having said to a I group of congressmen, "The Wilson league of nations has as much chance of being ratified as you have of being j pope of Rome. ' A sturdy movement is under way in j Democratic circles to unhorse Champ ; Clark and elect some Wilson follower as a house leader. Clark never outgrew his grouch because be-cause Wilson carried off the nomination J at the Baltimore convention in 1912, after he had polled a majority of the dele-sates. dele-sates. ; The eld fitfht has been rein-wed and Mr. Mays has identified himself him-self with the anti-Clark forces. The full statement by Mr. Mays which aroused the speaker follows: "The declaration signed by the reorganization reor-ganization committee clearly expresses the purpose of the organization. It is constructive. I joined the movement because be-cause It appeared to me imperative that we install leadership in harmony with the administration. We want a steering committee to steer the Democratic party away from the rocks of defeat.. Upon this committee all parts of the country are supposed to be represented, thus emphasizing em-phasizing the national character of the party and avoiding the tendency to eteer. This committee should approve as leader one who would be free from other committee com-mittee busin2ss or obligations; who would be willing to fight for the administration, admin-istration, not necessarily, subservient, but certainly not antagonistic. "This is no time to put jealous enemies or soreheads in charge of party leadership. leader-ship. We want a leader who will not inwardly rejoice at the abuse of the president. "I was elected upon the declaration that I would sustain the president, and assist him rather than hinder by harping harp-ing criticism. I have heard from my ; people. In mass meetings and the state legislature the people and their representatives repre-sentatives have overwhelmingly voted their approval of the president's efforts to establish a permanent peace. j "The league of nations' idea has been accepted by the "(Republican leaders as a party issue. Some Democrats will join them. Many of the Republicans and independents in-dependents will support the president. The people will approve. We certainly do not want antagonistic leaders. I personally per-sonally heard Speaker Clark, addressing a group of Democrats, say, "Wilson's league of nations has as much chance of being ratified r.s you have of being pope of Rome' thsn he explained that he, himself, had the only plan of disarmament, disarma-ment, and that upon a percentage basis. "The president is being bombarded from the front and from ambush we must not install and support leaders who will shoot from the rear. Our friends in solidly Democratic districts should not impose unnecessary burdens upon Democratic Demo-cratic brothers of the north and west. "We cannot afford to indorse the statement state-ment deliberately made by the speaker, ami never retracted, that 'there is very little difference between a conscript and a convict.' That statement, although not representing the view of the Democratic Demo-cratic majority in the house, nine-tenths of whom voted lor war, and conscription, conscrip-tion, was spread broadcast by our opponents oppo-nents in the fall campaign, and if not repudiated by the party would be thrust into the faces of three millions of our soldiers, and helr friends. "We cannot afford by our votes to approve ap-prove sarcastic antagonism to the league of nations. Our people are heartsick and weary of war, and will rebuke their servants ser-vants who go counter to earnest determination deter-mination of the president, and desires of the civilized world, to have a living covenant of peace." |
