Show John Derks Quits Newspaper Game After Long Service "Johnny Burke," of Sport-ing Sport-ing Page Fame, Removes to Pacific Northwest. Derks. sporting editor of the Tribune for a little more than live years, and for several years prior to that time on The Tribune stff. first as star reporter and then as city editor, edi-tor, is no longer "in the newspaper game. " He has changed his residence to a oily in the Pacific northwest, and does not plau to return to Salt Lake save for the purpose of visiting his many warm friends. it is with sincere regret that the coworkers co-workers with John Derks learn of his departure to another city- and another field of work. His career in Salt Lake proved him a newspaper man by instinct in-stinct and training, and there was no phase, of the difficult work ever undertaken under-taken bv "Johnny Burke" that he did not accomplish faith fullv and well. As long ago as '11102 Mr. Derks was news editor of the Anaconda Standard at Anaconda, Mont. He resigned from that place to accept the managing editorship edi-torship of the Helena Record, and was also in charge of the Anaconda Standard Stand-ard 's bureau at Helena. Later he went to the Salt Lake Herald, and was on that paper's staff at the time of its consolidation with the lntermountain Republican. He then went to the Og-den Og-den Standard, where he held an editorial edi-torial position for several months, leaving leav-ing Ogden to become a member of The Tribune, where he remained until a few days ago. John Derks is noted for his retiring disposition, modesty, fairness, courage of his convictions and ability to express them in language such that "he who runs may read. ' ' |
