YOUNG, I SON OF SALT LAKER, GOESTO VIRGINIA Wore, lias been received here that Joseph Jo-seph H. young, Salt J.aker. and formerly with the Oregon Short Line, but more recently of the Norfolk & Southern Railroad Rail-road company. lias been appointed president presi-dent of t lie Virginian Railway company ' to replace C. W. Huntington, removed by William G. McAdoo, director general of railroads. The Virginian Railway company is an important handler of bituminous coal for the navy, and some improvements were ordered some time ago by tho director general to increase ils carrying capacity and facilitate tiie supplying of coal to the navy. It is stated that the director general gen-eral learned that the improvements were being unnecessarily delayed, and he removed re-moved President Huntington from authority au-thority and appointed Mr. Young in his place. Joseph Hardie Voting was born January 17, 1S64, at Salt hake City. He is the son of .lydge he Grand Young and Grace (Hardie) Young. He is a graduate of the University of Utah. His first railroad experience ex-perience was gained in the engineer's office of-fice doing some surveying for the Oregon Short Line as a Qhainman. He was employed em-ployed as warehouseman in the employ of the Utah Central railway at Sandy, Utah. Following this lie served as agent and operator at different stations of the name railway and as bill clerk at the Salt Lake City stHtlon. V In I8S3 he entered the employ of the Union Pacific as ticket clerk and train agent at Ogden. Continuing in this po- sition until 18S6, he then became traveling travel-ing passenger agent for the Chicago & Northwestern railway, with headquarters at Salt Lake City. In 188H he was made general superintendent of the Utah Central Cen-tral railway at Salt Lake, remaining in that capacity for the two succeeding years. In 1S91 lie became superintendent of the Utah division of the Union Pacific system, sys-tem, and seryed until August 1. 1902. From the latter date he was successively general superintendent of the Rio Grande Western, general superintendent of the Colorado & Southern, general manager of the same railway, general superintendent superin-tendent of the St. Louis & San Francisco railroad and general superintendent of the Southern Pacific lines at San Francisco. In 1910 he became president of the Alaska Alas-ka Steamship company, the Northwestern Northwest-ern Fisheries company, the Northwestern Commercial company and several others. In May, 1912, he was chosen president of the Spokane, Portland & Seattle railway, rail-way, the Oregon Trunk railway and several sev-eral other smaller railway companies. On May 11, 1914, he was elected president of the Norfolk Southern Railroad company, com-pany, with headquarters in Norfolk, Va. Mr. Young was married September 21, 1898, to Miss Katherine Kimball Lawrence, Law-rence, daughter of former Commissioner Henry W. Lawrence. |
