Show GEHEHS FEAR ITZfpGER Kaiser's Forces Dreading Invasion of Fatherland by Americans. WITH THE AMERICAN ARMY XORTH WEST OF VERDUX, Oct. 2S. (By the Associated Press.) Although the German army is making the most desperate des-perate effort in the war's history to prevent pre-vent the Americans from breaking through in the vital Verdun sector, it ls equally or more fearful that thorc may be a breach endangering Metz, with the consequent necessity of abandoning all the territory still occupied, and an Invasion Inva-sion of the German empire itself. With division after division of troops, machine guns and artillery, the enemy is bitterly defending himself west of Verdun, Ver-dun, but it is with an elaborately strong trench system with rows of barbed wire and even electrified wire tliat he has been feverishly working during the past few weeks to make Mctz invulnerable. The system has been laid out. roughly, between be-tween Pont-a-Mousson. Avrlcourt and the Hlver Seilie, with a parallel front from Cheminol to Vic. The enemy's aetlvitv first showed itself it-self between Chateau -Sal ins and Moyen-vio, Moyen-vio, where no less than five parallel trenches have been constructed and three on the reverse side of t he slopes. The greater part of tills system has only recently re-cently been completed. Two additional lines in the rear have already been planned and traced out and a double system sys-tem of dugouts and machine gun emplacements em-placements has been prepared. This position po-sition is continued in the direction of Marsal and Mulcey. Another position has been hastily or-j ganized, depending upon the heights of I juvellze and Donnelay. It runs along the ridge upon which Is situated Mari-mont Mari-mont chateau and passes about a third of a mile from Bourdonay; it follows the southern outskirts of Malzieres woods, and finallv reaches the southern outskirts of Rec'.'.icourt forest and the heights of Koulerey, east of Avicourt. The southern pivot of this fortified position po-sition is situated northwest of CIrey. The , greater part of the line Is strong with electrically charged wires, thc current of which Is furnished by high-tension generators, gen-erators, the plants being located at the 1 Saline gorge. Morhangc and Sarrebourg. - |
