There are at least two riders on the bicycle race card at the Bonneville saucer track this evening who are looking forward for-ward to the races with more than usual Interest. These riders are Iver Lawson, former world's champion, and Artie Far-now, Far-now, local amateur champion and recent entry into the professional ranks. Lawson has- been training as though he were going- to ride for the championship champion-ship uf the country, and says that he is back in shape again. The former champion cham-pion will ride in a four-cornered match race against Wright, Crebs and Dieien-bacher, Dieien-bacher, which wiil be run in heats Law-son Law-son vs. . Biefenbacher and Crebs vs. Wright in half-mile heats. French style. The winners will meet in the final to decide de-cide first and second places and the losers will ride off for third and fourth places. This is the style of racing in which Law-son Law-son was unbeatable when he was in his prime. "Farnow is making his debut into open competition with the professionals, and his future success in the racing game will probably depend upon how much speed and generalship he shows in tonight's to-night's race, for if he can beat men like Lawson, Crebs. Biefenbacher and Wright, there is no reason why he can't compete successfully with the best riders in the country. Farnow will make a supreme effort in the two-mile open point race, professional, profession-al, and for that reason has entered only in that one race, as he wants to determine deter-mine for himself just what his chances are against the best riders now here. The amateur races also promise some interesting contests. The youngsters are showing more speed with every workout work-out and several of them are after Smertz, who has temporarily stepped into the shoes of Artie Farnow. They have all been training hard the past week in preparation prep-aration for the coming six -Cay race, which starts Tuesday night, and some fast time . is assured, especially in the one-mile handicap, in which Smertz, Walker and Samuelson will start from scratch in their respective heats. There will also be a half-mile open for the simon pures an& a one-mile consolation conso-lation for the riders who have not won a prize during the present meet. Clawson, the amateur rider who collided with the fence last Sunday night and was reported seriously injured, escaped with a broken collar bone, but will be out of the races for some time. Young Greenig, : who caused the spill, drew a thirty-day suspension and will not be permitted to I ride until the expiration of that time. |
