Show GERMANS TRIED TO BUY lljTWICO Tucson City Engineer Admits Ad-mits Having Been Sent to Look Over Field. TUCSON, Ariz., Jan. 12. Efforts of German interests to obtain a foothold in the Tampico oil fields of Mexico were disclosed by the arrest hero yesterday yes-terday of Charles Frederick von Peters-dorff, Peters-dorff, city engineer of Tucson. Von Petersdorff, who -was appointed engi-ueer engi-ueer last August, is charged -with eou-spiracy eou-spiracy to violate tho neutrality of the United States. In his testimony before United States Commissioner Joiies, Von Petersdorff disclosed his connection -with Franz Bopp, tho German consul at San Fran-cisco Fran-cisco convicted of conspiracy, and with Von Papen and Boy-Ed. Von Petersdorff, Peters-dorff, -who was born in Germany and was a lieutenant in the German' army before coming to America, is at liberty on $3000 bonds. In testimony before the commissioner, commission-er, Von Petersdorff admitted that in January, 1!U5, he received a letter from Bopp summoning him to San Prancisco and enclosing a check for $50. Von Petersdorff went to San Francisco, where, ho said, Bopp made him a proposition propo-sition to go to Canada, ostensibly on a mining deal, and advanced hini another an-other $100. The German consul at Seattle, Se-attle, a man named chulenberg, he said, gavo him $500 and sent hini to Vancouver, B. C. This chock, according accord-ing to tho evidence, was made out under a fictitious Polish name. Later, according to Von Petersdorff 's testimony, he was sent from Seattle to New York. There he' met Von Papen aud Boy-Kd, but denies that he was employed by them. Ho admits ho was supplied with $1000 by "certain Germans" Ger-mans" and sent to Tampico in an effort to obtain certain oil lauds. Von Petersdorff Peters-dorff sailed for the Mexican port, but found the lands were in possession of tho rebel forces and returued to the United States by way of New Orleans. |
