Several weeks ago Owens arrived in Salt . Lake and registered at the Newhouse hotel. He established credit by requesting that his commission papers be placed in the hotel vault for safe keeping.. He failed to state, however, that he had been discharged from the army more than a year ayo, never having served after attending the officers' training camp at the Presidio. Mis integrity was never questioned and lie was given the best room in the house, with privileges of the cafe. After having been a guest at the'New-house the'New-house hotel until his account reached something more than $100, it is alleged that lie asked for his commission papers, that he might show them to the officers at Fort Douglas. He failed to appear again at the Newhouse hotel, but changed his quarters to the Hotel Utah, where he repeated the operation of depositing his commission papers for the purpose of es-! es-! tablishing credit, it is alleged, and contracted con-tracted a bill similar in amount to that 1 extended to him by the Newhouse hotel. Securing his commission pa pers from t.Jie clerk one day, he silently disappeared and was not again heard from, it Is said, until he began making friends in Pocatello, Poca-tello, from whom, it is alleged, he borrowed bor-rowed divers sums of money on the strength of his uniform. Investigation has developed the fact that Owens was honorably discharged from the army before leaving the Presidio Pre-sidio training camp, where he was commissioned com-missioned as lieutenant of cavalry, and that he never was assigned to active , duty.
