Show COAL RATES RAISED FOR THE RAILROADS WASHINGTON, June 25. The interstate inter-state commerce commission today approved ap-proved an increase of 15 cents a tpn in freight rates on bituminous coal ' from Pent sylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio producing fields to points east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio rivers. These tariffs were exceptions to those filed by the carriers in asking for a flat 15 per cent increase. Approval of the tariffs is the result of informal hearings before the commission's commis-sion's suspension board June 8 on coal, coke and iron rates in official classification classifica-tion territory. The rates will become effective ef-fective July 1. Railroad men profess to see in the decision de-cision a favorable attitude toward granting grant-ing general relief to the eastern carriers car-riers in their plea for a horizontal raise of 15 per cent in all freight rates. |
