One week ago it appeared as if the Red Sox had been shot to pieces. Today the world's champions cham-pions nre playing the kind of ball that made them pennant winners and champions cham-pions of the world. During the past week they have pulled down the White Sox lead until the Chicagoans are but a game and a half in the van. They made the best showing of the leaders In the American Ameri-can league race, winning six of their eight contests, while the White Sox split even in a io:al of six combats. Cleveland made a poor showing during the week, winning only one game, and was forced to drop to the second division. The Tigers, winning four of their six games, are now in the coveted fourth place. Their pitchers are holding up better bet-ter than they did in the earlier part of the season and the Detroit sluggers are following Ty Cobb's lead by denting the ball hard. After the series with the Giants the Phillies go to Brooklyn for the week-end fracas with the Dodders.
