Sheriff Sher-iff N. E. Barnes of Christian count-, 111., arrived here vestcrday with extradition extra-dition papers for Tonv Mandelo, who is wanted at Taylorville, 111., for a "blaekhand" murder committed in April, 1916. Otto Drappa, who has been employed at Cambria, a coal camp a few miles from this place, and who was arrested by Sheriff Charles A. Howell at the request of Sheriff Barnes, is alleged al-leged to be Mandelo. Drappa arrived at Cambria a short time after the murder mur-der at Taylorsville. He was located by the Illinois officer through letters which he wrote to a woman. The victim of the crime with which Mandelo is charged was Alfred Tosetti. who, like the accused mau; was an Italian. Ital-ian. Tosetti had received several "blackhand" letters threatening his life. He was shot down, it is alleged, by Mandelo, in a pitch dark room, six bullets from a .25-caliber automatic pistol striking him in the breast and causing instant death. The murderer fled and escaped. Three months later an automatic pistol, believed to be that with which the murder vas committed, was found beneath a pile of lumber several miles from Taylorville, and, it is alleged, was identified as the property prop-erty of Mandelo. The Christian county coun-ty grand jury indicted Mandelo for the murder. |
