Another youth of 17 years who had enl sted when he was barely 16 and had served a year and a half at the front had been wounded and discharged came for clothes He was a fine blue eyed boy, whose father had been k lied and he has the respons bil ty of the whole family to shoulder One old woman came with a most dilap dated old coat pinned together t ghtly and with the rema ns of what had formerly been a pair of shoes still hanging to her feet There was no trouble in f tting her out with clothes but the shoes She tried on dozens of pa rs of women s shoes w thout even a near fit nnt 1 f nally a pa r of man s shoes had to be used She wont on her way rejo c ng only to come back in a few days to beg that the shoes be changed they were too large and stiff to be comfortable An so the work began aga n All the largest of the women s shoes were brought out tried on or cBt aside and back she had to go with the same pair of men s shoes Her husband is a prisoner in Germany |
