Show CRANK PROPOSAL. The whole island of Newfoundland became be-came dry territory the first of the year. The prohibition law is very drastic. It stops the importation, manufacture or sale of intoxicating liquors and no alcoholic al-coholic compound will be obtainable within the colony, except for medicinal, manufacturing or sacramental purposes. Many patent medicines are placed under the ban by the act and a public controller con-troller has been appointed, through whom medicinal prescriptions will be filled and supplies obtained. The provisions of the law seem strong enough for all practical practi-cal purposes. There is a disposition in this country, however, to go to the limit and in Nebraska, where prohibition was defeated numerous times before it finally passed, it is proposed to empower officers of-ficers of the law to arrest men whose breath carries the odor of liquor. New converts in any cause are apt "to be more or less fanatical, but this Nebraska proposition prop-osition certainly oversteps the line of demarcation between good sense and fanaticism. In order to carry it out we suppose breath detectors would be appointed. |
