Show MiSS HELEN TO TALKS TO WEN OODEX, Oct. 21. With M.Lss Helen Todd as the principal speaker more than 2 HO women attended an enthusiastic meeting of the Women 's Republican club in the Republican headquarters on Twenty-fourth street this afternoon. Mrs. Jenoette Hyde of Salt Lake and Francis Perkins also spoke. Mrs. Georgiana Marriott, president of the club, presided. At the suggestion of Mrs. Marriott that the meeting consist of questions and answers, one of the number present asked why women should not vote to reelect re-elect President Wilson. The chairman turned the question over to Miss Todd to answer. The speaker compared the pitiful industrial conditions where women wom-en do not vote to the improved conditions condi-tions in those states which have equal suffrage. Then in direct answer to the question Miss Todd declared that women wom-en should not vote for President Wilson Wil-son because, he had helped to defeat the constitutional amendment granting su ffra ge to all wo me n of th e Lrn i ted States. " "We had read much of President Wilson's sympathy for humanity' declared de-clared Miss Todd, and we were happy that he was president because we felt that his love of tho right would assist us in our campaign. - J magine our surprise sur-prise and disappointment when we "were received coldly and given one reason after another why he did not favor the constitutional amendment enfranchising the women of this nation. "The arguments of all women of all classes, including the overworked and underpaid, were of no avail. President Wilson preaches humanitarian principles, princi-ples, but he could not help us free enslaved en-slaved women by helping all women to obtain the ballot. We are certain that suffrage for women will not come about state by state, and Mr. Hughes has promised ns every effort in procuring the constitutional amendment. That is one reason why T am not going to vote for President Wilson." The remarks by Mrs. Ilyde were largely confined to the statement that "President Wilson has kept us out of j war. ; ' She ridiculed the supposition that the Republicans wanted war. any ! more than do the Democrats, pointing out that a Democratic woman cannot love her husband or son more than does a Democratic wife or mother. Mr. Perkins Per-kins called upon the women voters of Utah to assist the women of less fortunate for-tunate eastern states in procuring the ballot. He declared that this could be brought aboutx by voting for Mr. Hughes, who favors the constitutional amendment. Mrs. Reese Howell and Mrs, E. P. Mills, vice presidents of the club, spoke briefly at the outset of the meeting. meet-ing. There' were several musical selections selec-tions and refreshments were served following fol-lowing the meeting. |
