PARTS, Nov. 1 With clearing weather the French and British havo resumed their heavy attacks on the Sornme front, securing- what the war office, of-fice, describes in its midnight communication communi-cation as an ''important gain. A series of battles were fonght today, to-day, the most important being an action ac-tion of Lea Boeufs-Gueudecourt lina, : where tlie French and British fronts establish es-tablish contact. Here the action commenced thiring 1 the night. It was resumed after daybreak day-break and continued in numerous sharp outbreaks throughout the greater part of tlie day. As a result the allies have further extended their lines in their effort ef-fort to pocket Bapaume, the main. German Ger-man base, for this section of the front. Two systems of trenches were conquered con-quered and 125 prisoners taken by th French, who struck to the northeast of Les Boeufs. The British, attacking to the east, also won some ground. German Attack Fails. Further to the south, in the sector of Sailly-Saiilisel, there was desperate fighting throughout the day. Tho Germans Ger-mans iu tho early hours of the morning launched a major attack designed to wrest Sailly out of tho hands of the French. The attack failed with sanguinary san-guinary losses.
