Show FORT POSTOFFICE IS DAMAGED BY FIRE City Department Responds to Alarm and Extinguishes Blaze Caused by Basement Smudgo. Fire broko out in the postoffiee building at Fort Douglas at 9:30 last night, and before the department from the city arrived and laid a hose the roof was burned from the structure and considerable damago was done to the interior. Chief W. H. Bywater, with three pieces of apparatus, responded re-sponded from headquarters. An attempt at-tempt was made to extinguish the flames by usino; hose kept on hand at the fort, but it was found that it waa inadequate because of ago. Postmaster Post-master Hicks, in chargo of the building had gone down town to attend a lodgo meeting. The ftre started from a smudge which had been placed in the basement to thaw out water pipes. About $o0l) damage was douc. Two representatives representa-tives from tho United States postoffiee department visited the damaged building build-ing and took charge of registered mail on hand. |
