Show SEii VICTORY FATALTD AUSTRIA Precipitous Retreat Toward the Danube and Save Finally Fi-nally Ends in Rout PVRIis, Dec 18 12 35 a. m Tele graphing from f.ish the correspondent of tie Havas agency savs rull details of the fighting around Belgrade have not been received but enough i known, to sbow that there also the Austnaos suffered a defeat of a fatal nature After several days of stubborn fighting the Austrian troops occupied a line of posit ons echeloned from the northeast of Obre-novatz Obre-novatz as far as Koviona, to the south east of Avala (nine miles from Bel grade) The latter position was ear ried by the Serbs after several bayonet charges On December 13 14 other pos tions fell one after another until the Ans trians were completely beaten on the last hills to tbe north of Avala. They were beaten on the left flank by Ser vian columns debouch ng from Obre novatz. ' The Austnans retreated precipitately precip-itately toward the Danube and Save o er which bridges had previously been thrown and on which numerous mom tors 1 ghters and other craft waited to ferry the troops to the oppos ta bank While the Austr ans were cross n- in the greatest haste the bervians broke the last res stanee The Aus tnan columns which were left to pro tect tbe retreat were thrown into wild disorder and abandoned heavy guns rifles and other equ pment throw ng some of it into the Danube Servian artillery which was rapid ly brought up to pos Hons command ng both r vers, shelled and destroyed sev eral br dges The Austrian losses dur ing the latter days were enormous and those of the Servians also were se nous . . The Servians captured on Decern ber 13 14 about 10 000 prisoners of w hom sixty se en were officers th rty cannon including e ght mortars twenty machine guns 239 ammnn t on wagons twenty f eld kitchens numer ons horses and a great quantity of sup plies Many Austr ans were drowned When King Peter and Prince Ceorge and Pr nee Alexander entered Belgrade the fighting was still going on in the lower part of the city be tween the last detachments of the re treating Austr ans and tha first col nmns of the Servian infantry |
